Find out what your pennies are worth
Penny Value is an app for one coin only: the US one-cent piece. Take a photo of the front and the back of a penny, and it tells you the year, the mint mark and the variety, what to check, and a Penny Value estimate for its condition.
Penny Value is an Android app for now, so it isn't on the App Store. The values and checks on this page are free to use.Penny Value is an Android app. Open this page on your Android phone to check your own penny with a photo.
Popular look-ups
What it does
- Reads the date and the mint mark. When a photo isn't clear enough, it asks for a close-up instead of guessing.
- Knows the pennies worth checking. Key dates, doubled dies and other varieties come with the signs to look for, plus a weight or magnet test where it helps.
- Gives an honest estimate. Values come from the Penny Value catalogue, built from public sale records, mintage and survival data. Each one carries its date.
- Keeps your collection. Save your coins and fill Lincoln cent sets date by date.
How it works
- Put one penny on a plain surface in good light.
- Take a photo of the front, then the back.
- If the date or mint mark is hard to read, take a quick close-up.
- Read the result and check the signs it lists.
Good to know
- Values are estimates for information. They are not an offer to buy or sell, and not an appraisal.
- Rare pennies are often faked or altered. No photo can prove a coin is genuine: for a valuable coin, use a grading service such as PCGS or NGC.
- Free to use with a daily scan limit and ads. An optional Pro subscription removes ads and adds more detail.
